List of the Top Search Engines

Search engines, directories and how many Alexa visitors they had.

#1 Google
Total Alexa Visits: 13,525,582 (#5 +366.2%)
Search Area: http://www.google.com
Site Submit Area: http://www.google.com/addurl
Notes: Here is what Google have to say about themselves. "A page has high importance if lots of other pages with high importance point to it. This well-defined notion of importance makes finding high quality sites easy." Translated, this means link popularity (how many incoming links), link relevancy (what the links say), and link quality (popularity of the sites linking to you) are very important. They've also added the Open Directory to their search results. Google continues to grow in importance. Its search results are accurate, and it's very easy to submit pages to it.

#2 Yahoo
Total Alexa Visits: 12,556,597 (#1 +7.2%)
Search Area: http://www.yahoo.com
Site Submit Area: Navigate to the category most appropriate and use the small "suggest a site" link. It is almost impossible to get listed in Yahoo these days, unless you are willing to pay for their Express Service.
Notes: Yahoo is a directory, not a search engine. Each submission to Yahoo is reviewed by a human, if they like your site, your site will be added to the directory. For your best chance on getting into Yahoo, follow the formula in "Winning the Search Engine Wars" by Planet Ocean Communications. Backup search results are provided by Google.

#3 MSN Search
Total Alexa Visits: 9,076,984 (#2 +93.7%)
Search Area: http://search.msn.com
Site Submit Area: http://search.msn.com/addurl.asp
Notes: Submissions are handled by LookSmart. Search results come from the LookSmart directory followed by Inktomi technology. Real Names and Direct Hit also have a presence.

#4 Alta Vista
Total Alexa Visits: 4,911,981 (#3 +9.4%)
Search Area: http://www.av.com
Page Submit Area: http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/addurl
Notes: A simple url (web page address) is all that's required to submit a page for free. Or you can use the paid LookSmart submission service. The free submit button is at the bottom of the page submit area. Then you'll need to decipher a code for every five web pages that you want to submit.

#5 GoHip!
Total Alexa Visits: 4,395,924 (#13 +466.1%)
Search Area: http://www.gohip.com
Site Submit Area: No submit area.
Notes: A meta search engine that retrieves the top results from paid search engines like FindWhat and 7Search. Rapid growth was due to a viral marketing strategy that infected / affected users email.

#6 Excite
Total Alexa Visits: 2,810,318 (#4 -18.7%)
Search Area: http://www.excite.com
Page Submit Area: http://www.excite.com/info/add_url
Notes: Use the LookSmart paid submission or click on the tiny free link at the bottom of the page. There you'll find a small form to fill out. Excite has a nasty habit of binging and purging pages. One month you'll have hundreds of pages indexed and the next month only your home page. Be sure to link all your pages and web sites together to increase your stickiness in this engine. Excite continues to be a default search engine in the Explorer 5.0 browser.

#7 Ask Jeeves
Total Alexa Visits: 2,616,059 (#7 +23.4%)
Search Area: http://www.ask.com
Site Submit Area: http://www.ask.com/docs/help/Help_faq.asp#submiturl
Notes: A search engine where you ask questions in plain English. Ask Jeeves offers many advertising and ecommerce options. Ad placement may be triggered by keywords, categories, channels or sponsorships. To get your site listed, they ask that you read their guidelines and then send the URL and a brief description of the site via e-mail.

#8 GoTo
Total Alexa Visits: 1,492,023 (#11 +22.1%)
Search Area: http://www.goto.com
Site Submit Area: No free submissions
Notes: Targeted paid advertising where keywords are purchased. Highest bidder on a particular search phrase ie: .25¢ comes up first in the results. You only pay for actual click-throughs to your site, not by impressions. After the paid listings, searches default to Inktomi. Listings from this engine appear on AltaVista, HotBot, AOL Search, Lycos and many others.

#9 Netscape Search
Total Alexa Visits: 1,476,031(#6 -34%)
Search Area: http://home.netscape.com/escapes/search/netsearch_0.html
Page Submit Area: Use the Open Directory
Notes: This is the search area on Netscape. It is what you get when you click on the search button in the Netscape web browser. Search results come from Open Directory (dmoz.org). If there are no search results, there are just links provided to other search engines.

#10 HotBot
Total Alexa Visits: 1,340,026 (#8 -8.3%)
Search Area: http://www.hotbot.com
Page Submit Area: http://www.hotbot.com/addurl.asp
Notes: An url and email address are required to submit to this engine. It uses custom filtered Inktomi results through Direct Hit technology. Its directory is provided by Open Directory. This engine is owned by Lycos and run as a separate service.

#?? Where is Inktomi
Total Alexa Visits: Lots
Search Area: Several Major Search Engines
Page Submit Area: Use HotBot or the paid service at PositionTech.com
Notes: Inktomi is a technology - not a search engine itself - that is used and branded by several major portals and search engines. Inktomi provides search results to over 50 partners, including AOL, MSN, HotBot, and iWon.

To submit to this engine there is a free submit area on the HotBot site. By using the free submit, your page will get a slight penalty until it is also found by Inktomi's automated spider. Once your page is indexed by the crawling spider, the penalty is removed. So be sure to link to any newly created pages with several others. Using the paid submission service at PositionTech.com avoids the penalty and ensures your page gets spidered every 48 hours.

#11 LookSmart
Total Alexa Visits: 1,059,330 (#12 +12.2%)
Search Area: http://www.looksmart.com
Site Submit Area: http://submit.looksmart.com/
Notes: Unless you are a non profit organization, you'll need to pay to get reviewed by a human editor. LookSmart is partnered with, and providing directory results for Microsoft's MSN, Excite@Home, AltaVista, and InfoSpace. Default web search results provided by Alta Vista.

#12 Lycos
Total Alexa Visits: 981,153 (#14 +33.2%)
Search Area: http://www.lycos.com/
Page Submit Area: http://www.lycos.com/addasite.html
Notes: An url and email address are all that are required to submit your site. Lycos is notoriously slow to add spidered sites and it may take three months or more before your site finally shows up in the index. Search results include directory listings and reviewed sites, followed by paid GoTo links, shopping links and a couple of "found" web sites.

#13 Hoovers Online
Total Alexa Visits: 909,076 (#54 +10,030%)
Search Area: http://www.hoovers.com
Site Submit Area: No submit area.
Notes: Formerly Powerize.com, Hoovers Online is a major business portal. Search results are press releases and company news from Associated Press, PR Newswire and the other usual leading business and financial sources.

#14 Go
Total Alexa Visits: 711,036 (#9 -42.5%)
Search Area: http://www.go.com/
Page Submit Area: No free submissions
Notes: Formerly the great Infoseek search engine, that once upon a time used to spider submitted web sites within 24 hours. It emerged into a portal called Go, and has since then fizzled into being powered by paid GoTo listings alone. To list your site here, you'll need to bid for terms at GoTo.

#15 NBCi
Total Alexa Visits: 593,089 (#17 +54.1%)
Search Area: http://www.nbci.com/
Site Submit Area:http://home.nbci.com/LMOID/resource/0,566,-1077,00.html
Notes: Formerly known as Snap! it was a directory of sites compiled by human editors. To get your site listed, go to the above url, and sign up for a free membership by following the instructions. You can then find the most appropriate category and submit your site. Once your site is submitted, you can choose to "promote it" for a fee and get a better listing.

#16 InfoSpace
Total Alexa Visits: 545,494 (#10 -55.6%)
Search Area: http://www.infospace.com/
Page Submit Area: http://www.infospace.com/info/submit.htm
Notes: InfoSpace provides maps, directions and city guides to Alexa and other online services. They also provide a people and business finder to MSN Search. Search results on InfoSpace come from LookSmart followed by results from Goto, then Inktomi and others. You can use the large InfoSpace form (requiring keywords, description and MUCH more) to submit your site, but it's not clear where you'll come up in InfoSpace search results by taking the time to do so.

#17 Fast.no (alltheweb.com)
Total Alexa Visits: 495,401 (#20 +65.1%)
Search Area: http://www.alltheweb.com
Site Submit Area: http://www.ussc.alltheweb.com/add_url.php3
Notes: One of the largest indexes of the internet but until August 1999 they didn't have a submission area. Sometimes the submit page is up, at other times it's down, check back in a few days to see if the submit area goes offline. An url is all that's required to submit to this search engine. Expect this search engine to grow in popularity as more search engines and portals start adding custom filtering to Fast technology.

#18 Open Source Directory
Total Alexa Visits: 476,272 (#29 +172.9%)
Search Area: http://www.dmoz.org
Site Submit Area: http://www.dmoz.org/add.htm
Notes: Being in this position on this list is a little bit misleading for the Open Directory. The Alexa visits only reflects the amount of users that went directly to dmoz.org. In reality, the Open Source Directory is a much bigger, second only to Yahoo in popularity. Several search engines use the Open Source Directory as their default searches, directory or portal, including Lycos, AOL and Netscape Search.

Find the most appropriate category and submit your site information from the Add URL link at the top of that category page. In other words, find the best place for your site to go, and click on Add URL from there. This directory has been widely adopted across the internet as competition for Yahoo and is run by hundreds of volunteer editors. Follow the same rules for submission as Yahoo! Keep your site descriptions free of brand names unless you own them, and remove any hype or self promotion.

#19 AOL NetFind
Total Alexa Visits: 469,381 (#16 +13.5%)
Search Area: http://www.aol.com/netfind
Site Submit Area: http://search.aol.com/add.adp
Notes: The America Online web site. There is no true submit area as they have switched to the Open Directory with an Inktomi back up.

#20 Google News Groups (Deja News)
Total Alexa Visits: 431,418 (#23 +75.4%)
Search Area: http://groups.google.com/
Site Submit Area: Navigate to the appropriate group and post
Notes: Once known as dejanews.com and deja.com, it tried to put the newsgroups behind it and become a portal. The site has now been acquired and restored to its former glory by Google search engine. To get found in the newsgroups search area, submit a posting to an appropriate newsgroup using your favorite internet browser. For best results and maximum exposure from your postings, be sure to read the chapter in Nothing But Net on posting to newsgroups.

#21 Northern Light
Total Alexa Visits: 425,649 (#15 -4.2%)
Search Area: http://www.northernlight.com
Site Submit Area: http://www.northernlight.com/docs/regurl_help.html

Total Alexa Visits: 173,393 (#27 -11.6%)
Search Area: http://www.directhit.com
Site Submit Area: http://www.directhit.com/util/addurl.html
Notes: Direct Hit promises more accurate results the 1st time, seems like many people agree. They require an url, email and five or six keywords to submit. It's a "popularity" search engine where the results displayed are based on "actual search activity" and topics that other people have researched. Sites that people visit and "spend time at" for particular search topics are then ranked higher than other sites. This technology has been applied to several of the largest search engines and you can expect it to grow in the future. Several sources have reported "better" positioning when you submit your site directly to Direct Hit's add url link. Direct Hit is owned by Ask Jeeves.

Notes: This one is a little tricky to "submit" to. You MUST be able to receive email as "webmaster@yourdomainname.com".
